DON'T MELT KILN: Check the Control Configuration if you replace your control

Replacement DynaTrol or Genesis controls typically come preconfigured with Type K thermocouples and 3-zone control. This may not match your kiln!

IMPORTANT: CONFIRM THERMOCOUPLE TYPE

If your kiln uses Type S thermocouples, but the new control is set for Type K, the kiln could overfire to the point of a complete meltdown.

Don't let this happen:

Type K wire (connecting the thermocouple to the control) is usually yellow or brown.

Type S wire is typically green in the U.S.

See this guide for more on thermocouple wiring and polarity.

Type K thermocouples typically look like this.

Type-K 8 Ga. Thermocouple - Standard

Type S thermocouples typically look like this.

Type-S Thermocouple - 120 mm (Standard Length)

Type K Pyrocil thermocouples typically resemble this.

How Many Zones Does Your Kiln Have?

Count the number of thermocouples—this should match the number of zones configured in your controller.

  1. To change the zone setting on a DynaTrol, follow these instructions: Hidden Menu on DynaTrol, then How to Change Zones.

  2. For a Genesis controller, see: How to Change Zones on a Genesis.

Check the Thermocouple Offset

The thermocouple offset setting must match your thermocouple type and setup:

  1. Type S thermocouples: Offset = 00.00

  2. Type K with closed ceramic protection tube: Offset = 00.18 (18°F)

  3. Type K with open ceramic protection tube (or bare): Offset = 00.00
