Fireproofing Around a Kiln
Short answer: No, you cannot place a kiln near non-fireproof surfaces.
- All surfaces within 3 feet (36", .91 Meters) of the kiln must be fireproof.
- If non-fireproof surfaces are present, cover them with cement board to make them heat-resistant.
- Cement board (available in 4' x 8' sheets at hardware stores) is commonly used under tile floors and walls. The thicker, more rigid type is best.
- For walls, leaving a 1" gap behind the cement board significantly improves heat protection.
- For floors, a double layer of cement board works best, as leaving a 1” gap is impractical. The boards should extend at least 12" beyond the kiln’s footprint.
- To improve appearance, you can cement tiles over the board.
- Cinder blocks can also be used under the kiln for additional protection, as seen in this photo.
