The process for ceramic armor production depends on the company making it. Many companies start with a metal matrix compound slurry poured into a mold. The process for this is often proprietary information.
Challenges
The ceramics used are very difficult to work with. They are often combined with a binder to make them easier to handle in the green state. This binder needs to be burned out cleanly before the mold can be sintered and the piece is finished. The firing process for these compounds is often very slow, sometimes taking days. This long firing schedule affects the life of the kiln components.
Market
Most large scale companies that control the market in this application work directly with the United States Government.
